The Cayman Islands National Museum is home to a series of visually-enticing walkthrough exhibitions. Enjoy recreations of the natural environment, learn from historical dioramas, view works by local artists, and more. The museum is housed in the Old Courts Building, an 1800s government centre and Cayman’s oldest surviving structure, making it a testament to the islands’ heritage, both inside and out.

An artifact in its own right

A wattle-and-daub Caymanian structure with timber framing for the upstairs, the Old Courts Building exemplifies the most iconic form of Caymanian architecture.

The building has seen many uses over the years. One of the few 19th century structures on the island, it was the first post office, the first commissioner’s offices, and the original courthouse and jail, while it has also served as a schoolroom, a public library, a savings bank, a church, and a dance hall.

As a courthouse, the building was so central to public life that its exterior staircase gave rise to the phrase “walking the 12 steps” to describe a visit to the judge. The jail portion can still be viewed today by visitors to the museum.
